Across Alaska, Starlink terminals are rapidly being installed, providing a new technology that has quickly transformed internet connectivity in remote areas of the state. Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, began launching low-orbit satellites into space in 2019, revolutionizing internet infrastructure worldwide.

Since Starlink internet became available in Alaska late last year, thousands of residents have signed up at a rate that exceeds expectations. While the Starlink signal experiences some imperfections, such as decreased strength due to increased user competition, it has also become faster and more stable with the addition of satellites to the system.

Experts acknowledge that satellite-delivered internet is not as superior as faster, more stable fiber-optic internet. However, Alaska’s telecommunication companies are planning to extend fiber-optic lines across much of rural Alaska in the coming years with federal investments from the bipartisan infrastructure act and other bills.

In Southwest Alaska, the Kuskokwim Corp., an Alaska Native corporation, has begun purchasing Starlink systems for 450 shareholder households in an effort to bridge the digital divide in the region. The corporation covers the cost of the terminal and hook-up gear, while families pay the monthly bill. The increased internet speed has been life-changing for these communities.

While the corporation and its partners have applied for federal grants to extend fiber to the region, it may take five years to complete. The recent fiber cable cut in northern Alaska highlights the importance of having multiple internet sources to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for rural communities.

Starlink’s growth is attributed to SpaceX’s ability to deploy satellites in low orbits around the earth at a rapid pace. SpaceX owns the express train to deliver satellites to space, with over 4,500 satellites in operation, accounting for 53% of the active units in orbit.

Starlink’s availability directly to consumers has contributed to its expansion. In rural Alaska, more Starlink terminals are being seen due to its accessibility. In comparison, OneWeb’s signal is distributed through Alaska-based internet service providers before reaching individual households or businesses.

Starlink users find the installation process fairly easy, with some hiring local companies for assistance. The service is also more cost-effective than other telecom companies in Alaska, providing faster and unlimited internet access.

Overall, Starlink is revolutionizing connectivity in remote parts of Alaska, bridging the digital divide and providing reliable internet access to communities that have long been devoid of such services.
