Amazon Web Services (AWS) India Private Limited has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) to foster space-tech innovations through cloud computing. This collaboration aims to provide space startups, research institutes, and students with access to cutting-edge cloud technologies, accelerating the development of new solutions in the space sector.

The partnership between AWS and ISRO will combine AWS’s educational programs on cloud computing with ISRO’s space-tech expertise to inspire future generations to pursue careers in India’s growing space industry. Promoting innovation in the space sector is a key priority for India, as geospatial solutions hold the potential to deliver high-quality services for effective governance and add value to stakeholders.

Cloud computing plays a vital role in managing large volumes of raw space data efficiently and running workloads related to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and analytics, resulting in meaningful outcomes at a lower cost.

The collaboration between ISRO, IN-SPACe, and AWS will focus on fostering the startup community in the space-tech sector. Through the AWS Activate program, eligible space startups will receive free access to tools, resources, and expert technical support from AWS, enabling them to build innovative solutions and bring them to market faster. Additionally, startups will benefit from AWS’s expertise in building aerospace and satellite solutions.

Another aspect of this collaboration is the joint initiative to train students and educators in cloud computing, AI, ML, analytics, and security. Leveraging AWS educational programs, this initiative will provide students with the opportunity to earn industry-recognized cloud computing certifications and empower them to establish future space startups in India using advanced technologies.

This collaboration follows the recent approval of the Indian Space Policy, 2023, which sets a strategic roadmap for the growth and development of India’s space program. The availability of low-latency internet, high-resolution Earth observation data, and Internet of Things (IoT) communications creates significant opportunities for startups, scientists, and researchers to innovate at scale using cloud computing, data, AI, and ML.

With this partnership, AWS aims to assist startups in identifying use cases, accelerating solution development, and building a skilled talent pool in India with expertise in cloud and space technologies. By supporting the development of space-tech solutions, AWS strives to improve life on Earth. Shalini Kapoor, Director and Chief Technologist, Public Sector, AWS India and South Asia, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration and India’s focus on expanding and strengthening its capabilities in the aerospace and satellite industry.
